Wk6, Bk5, Ch8, SUMMARY: The Houses of Healing
Merry arrives at Minas Tirith battle weary and weak as Eowyn and Theoden are carried into the city. He collapses on the stairs. Pippin finds him and sends a message ahead with Bergil to alert Gandalf. Gandalf soon arrives and rues the fact that the hobbit had not been carried in honor into the city. He is placed in a soft bed near Faramir and Eowyn in the houses of Healing.
Even though their knowledge is great, the healers of Minas Tirith are not skilled in healing wounds inflicted by the Nazgul. Ioreth, the eldest of the women who serves in that house, looks upon Faramir and weeps, "Alas, if he should die," she says.
Aragorn, Eomer, and Prince Imrahil prepare to enter Minas Tirith but Aragorn decides that it is better if he remains outside until he is bidden to enter, for he deems the time unripe. Eomer and Imrahil leave him and enter the city. As they look upon King Theoden, Eomer asks about his sister. Imrahil informs him that Eowyn still lived the last he saw her. Gandalf arrives and escorts them to the houses of healing where Eowyn is near death.
Aragorn, summoned by Gandalf, also enters for he has the knowledge to heal. The Captain of the Dunedain, the name Aragorn wishes to be called, asks for Athelas. When the healing leaves are finally brought, he goes to each patient calling them out of their dark dreams. Afterwards, Gandalf and Aragorn go to the Warden of the house and counsels him that Faramir and Eowyn should remain there for many days more but the hobbit could walk a bit in the care of his friends.
After Aragorn has supped, he is approached by men of the city beseeching him to heal their kinsmen. Together with Elladan and Elrohir, they labor far into the night. Soon the news travels that the king has indeed come among them and they begin to call him "Elfstone" because of the green stone he wears. Just before dawn Aragorn leaves the city and returns to his tent to sleep.
