Imagine that you are one of the Eldar. You have heard about these Edain (men), and finally have had an encounter with them. Another Eldar, who hasn't met them, asks you to describe these new people. What would you say? How would you describe them? What words would you use to explain the differences between the Atani and the Quendi (men and elves)?

I don't think I would be saying anything particularly complimentary about the race of Men, if I were one of the Eldar. They would surely seem brutal and coarse, rather uncivilized and even perhaps bestial - having neither the time the Elves have had, or the experience of Valinor, or the learning of the Valar. They are also prone to contagious illness and early death.
Speaking animals with potential, perhaps?
namaste,

Speaking not as one of the Eldar but as myself, I might add that I find myself very much drawn to the race of the Edain in Tolkien's writing - they have a temperament and courage that seems less pronounced in the other races. They are capable of terrible mistakes, but they also show great nobility, and loyalty as well.
If I were one of the Elven-kings, I too would want these short-lived, volatile, strong-willed creatures in my retinues, especially as guardsmen.
namaste,
Azurite
