Greetings folks, I'm new here and thought I would pop in and say hello (or hullo or well met or whatever the appropriately Tolkienesque thing to say is). I learned about this forum from a friend of mine who goes by the name Ninhiisenen around these parts. Did I spell that right, Nini? My name's Eric but here I guess I'm Fredegar Hornblower. Got that from one of those nifty little hobbit name generators. Ain't it cute? Let's see, the forum description says we should talk about how we first discovered Middle-earth. My first exposure was through the Rankin-Bass Hobbit and Return of the King cartoons (hence my avatar). They were two of my favorite movies as a kid and as soon as I learned there was more to the story, you couldn't keep me away from the books with a pointed stick! Been a major Tolkien nut ever since. Even wrote a Tolkien-themed paper in college, as I'm sure many others have in the past. Anyhow, I guess I'll be seeing you all around the boards. Save me some of those lembas!

So glad you joined Tolkien's Ring! You have joined at the perfect time cuz at the end of this month we will be having our 3rd anniversary celebration, so keep checking the boards for information on that! Any way Good Day! And mean it in all the ways it could mean!

Welcome, Fredegar (Eric). This is a quiet little spot in the world wide web, but I've come to like my quiet little spots with people who are always pleasant and ready for conversation.

Welcome Fredegar Hornblower:
Glad to have you join our fellowship. Thanks, Nin, for sending him our way!
As Desi said, January is an exciting month! The Hobbit Study will begin again this coming Monday after the holiday break and Tolkien's Ring's 3rd Anniversary is coming up the end of the month! We have lots of surprises planned.
Welcome aboard.

Let me add my "welcome" to the chorus, Fredegar Hornblower!
As Magpie states, this is a 'mostly quiet forum' where little occurs to ruffle the smooth waters of our highly sedate, mostly "sociable" debate...
So, we wonders, just where does this hobbity fellow stand on the real issues? Orcs redeemable? LOL!
Ah! The Old Rankin-Bass "Hobbit!" So far it is my favorite among the several attempts to bring Tolkien to the screen.

So, we wonders, just where does this hobbity fellow stand on the real issues? Orcs redeemable? LOL! "Orcs redeemable"....funny you should mention that. Ninihiisenen and I are both in an RP thread on another site (this one devoted to my other major interest, comics). In that thread, I play.....a peaceful orc!

"Peaceful Orc? Bah!!!"............(oops sorry...)
hello Fredegar and welcome to Tolkien's Ring!
let me introduce myself...i am Majah known as the TR Art Goddess but i seem to channel a particularly offensive orc and it slips out of my normally gentle and loveable demeanor when i least expect it!!! ;D
i look forward to seeing your input and insights on our favorite subject of Tolkien. Majah

"Peaceful Orc? Bah!!!"............(oops sorry...) Heh heh. I figured that would be the general reaction. Probably even Prof. Tolkien himself would disagree with me. But I always found it hard to believe that an entire species could be evil. Surely in all the hundreds of thousands of orcs, there might be one who was a rebel. One who rejected the brutish ways of his people in favor of less violent pursuits. He'd be an outcast no doubt but a powerful reminder that looks can be deceiving. Anyhow, that's my character, Zanarsh. I thought it was a fun spin on a fantasy stereotype.
