Your majesty, the Silmarillion is harder to understand than any of the other Tolkien books. It's written in a much more mythological vein, and is swamped with people and places. I don't know how your mind works (not having gotten to know you yet), but for me I found it really helpful to take notes! It's also good to use the notes in the back of the book, along with the family trees. It helps to keep track of who is human and who is elven in these stories.
First time through I'd suggest getting an overall view, just a sense of what is going on. You may find yourself re-reading the book at another time. We have these boards, which will hopefully be of use, and when you run into specific questions, ask!! There aren't any silly questions here.

Hi there, Ryan! Some of us, who are much older than 13, have trouble with
The Silmarillion. Don't let it get you down -- it's not easy stuff to
absorb. I want to tell you to stick with it, but if it's too frustrating, maybe go back
to it later. No biggie! Also, I think we'll be doing another slow-read of The
Sil, so you can ask away then. (DA?)
Hang in there, Ryan!

Reading notes and thoughts (and discussion) for the Silmarillion still reside on the board with that name. They are not that easy to find, because the threads are named by week number of the syllabus we were following, rather than by chapters. But start with the thread called Week One, and use it to help you read.
Take it slow! Enjoy!

Hey there King Elessar!
First I read Silmarillion and I got really confused, but if you can get your hands on a copy of Unfinished Tales then do. It deals with a lot of the same material and it cleared up my confusion. It reallly did help me.
