A few weeks ago, I have started to read the Silmarillion. Many of my friends told me that it is actually boring, because it is more like a history, and difficult to follow, so that is why I had waited. But now I have finally put myself to the task.
My first imression: though it definitely isn't an easy book, it certainly is NOT boring. I even found it very interesting. And that, coming from one who always loathed history at high school, means a lot. Second, I think you can compare it a bit with the Old Testament. Especially in the Ainulindale, that reminds me about Genesis (and I never liked religion either!). It is a bit funny that these things never interested me at school, but when it comes to Middle-Earth, I can't get enough about them. The irony of life?
This is a bit a first, general impression of mine, but first I 'll have to finish it and reread it several times. Anyway, it is proven again that I shouldn't always listen to my friends and that I have to take the time to form my own opinion.

Lara, You have found our Silmarillion study, no? It was most helpful to me in getting through the difficult passages in Sil, which, for me, were basically everything after Ainulindale. Definitely, as you said, a book to read and re-read.

Is'nt it great the passion a really great teacher can instill in us?

Illadria, I agree with you 100%. And I am just like Lara, always hated history and all. I am reading Silmarillin right now and I find it fascinating.

Lara and Jessie:
As you read through the Silmarillion, take a look at the study question threads on this board. Megn1 was so kind to be our study leader on this book and she did a wonderful job explaining things and giving us more things to think about as we read thru it. These threads will help you understand things you may be unclear about. You can always add your own comments and insights to these threads as well. I am sure many of us in the community would be happy to start some of these threads up again, too!
