Ok guys, I finished it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t my book, I got it from the library and I had to return it CRYING EMOTICON. So for this moment I just can’t reread and reread it yet. I say yet, because I found it very interesting, and I am planning to buy it. In English, and from the moment this book is in my possession, I will dig up that study that Sparrow has mentioned, and see how good I understood it. I think I could follow reasonably well, because I have taken my time and kept my head with it. But, being only the first time, there will probably be lots of things that I should want to recapitulate.
I must say that the story about Beren and Lúthien had a big hold over me; that part really spoke to the romantic soul within me. Also, the story about Túrin Turambar and his sister Nienor gripped me, because of the tragic faith of both of them. I mean, there they are, they have finally found each other, but then they don’t know it. And when they finally find out that they are in fact brother and sister, things are too great a mess and they loose each other again, and their bodies do not even rest side by side. It is to be hoped that they have found peace in wherever the souls of Men reside after their deaths.
But for further understanding, I will follow the advice of Sparrow and take up that study. It is also a perfect alibi to go buy the book and reread it again and again and again.

Congratulations on finishing the Silmarillion! That's no small feat. That book has defeated many, so I hope you feel proud of yourself.
It gets easier and easier with each read. Now that you've done it once, you're on your way!
Personally I don't like the story of Turin. It's just too depressing. But I love the story of Beren and Luthien. I also like the story of Feanor - his skill which creates such beauty, and his hurt and pride which create such pain. Yet much that is beautiful would never have been, but for his pride.

i am soo happy for you!!! as megn1 has said, the book is no small feat. i also love the story of Luthien and Beren. i also like the whole thing about the two trees, larurelin and telperion. (forgive me if i have spelled their beautiful names wrong.) as for me, i have read The Sil 7 times. and i have to say, the first time was the hardest.
Alaere i am wishing that you do buy it, it is definately worthwhile.

I bow down in your honor...I am working through the Silmarillion for the first time and am having a really rough time of it. I love our man J.R.R. but the Sil requires a kind of concentration that's hard to achieve when you have an active pre-schooler and a three month old baby interrupting you all the time.
I loved the Beren -Lutihen story too. That seems to be a universal favorite, not just here but on all my Tolkien boards.
I just finished Chapter 21 myself and darn it is depressing! Turin isn't a very sympathetic character...but he just pays and pays and pays, poor guy. I also feel sorry for Mim the dwarf..I know how hard it is to be picked on for being short

I've only read the Silmarillion once and it is much deeper and packed with so much to absorb. I am reading Unfinished Tales right now and want to go back to the Silmarillion again once I am finished with UT and flip back and forth between the two books. Unifinished Tales fills in more detail on what the Silmarillion touches but because they were unfinished tales, JRRT was still developing them so there is some conflicting information and nonconformities between the two.

Wow, a Silmarillion Study! Lol, I still have only read it just once! I did buy myself the book in the mean time, English version. Started reading it, but had to give up again, since it was kind of difficult. I still plan on reading it again, only I'll have to do it when I can keep my head with it. It's a rather hard English that's used in there, plus the book itself wasn't exactly 'light' to begin with.
Stormrider: I've also bought the Unfinished Tales... I think I might follow your example and read that first. Or maybe immediately start flipping back and forth!

I also just finished reading The Silmarillion last week. The first half was really hard to get through, but the second half was far more interesting, or perhaps it was because I really was absorbing some of what I had read and it was finally coming together for me.
Galenas suggested one should read The Lost Tales first, then tackle The Silmarillion as it helped to make sense of it. Think I'll give it a read, then try for the Sil again.
