Wk12, Bk6, Ch6, DISCUSSION: Unfinished Tales
Sam feared that Bilbo would never write their story now. The old hobbit opened an eye, "You see, I am getting so sleepy . . . And when I have time to write, I only really like writing poetry. I wonder, Frodo my dear fellow, if you very much mind tidying things up a bit before you go? Collect all my notes and papers, and my diary too, and take them with you, if you will. You see, I haven’t much time for the selection and the arrangement and all that. Get Sam to help, and when you’ve knocked things into shape, come back, and I’ll run over it. I won’t be too critical." And Frodo agreed.
Why do you think Bilbo wanted only to write poetry?
As I read this, I wondered about another author. His publishers were pushing him to write a "sequel" to the Hobbit when his own desire was to finish the Silmarillion. When Tolkien wrote this passage in Many Partings, had he spoken to his son as Bilbo did to Frodo? Did he, I wonder, entrust his notes and papers to Chris? Or did Christopher Tolkien make this decision on this own? I wondered, too, if Chris had a "Sam." Regardless, I feel it was a blessing that Frodo and Chris collected all those bits and pieces of unfinished tales, selecting and arranging them so that others might treasure them some day.
