I added my bit. I'm setting up for a Shadowfax encounter. It doesn't matter which way we end up going, though. Shadowfax could show up no matter what. Is Zonk a stallion or a gelding? I'm showing that he's kinda neutral/ reluctant to meet Shadowfax. Fan

If we are going to pass up The Fellowship, we will have to ride out further east of the mountains so we don't run into them when we pass them up. Can anyone tell from maps what the ground cover is like? Or does the book say? I better do some research. * * * Here is some General Knowledge and perhaps why the mares are starting to act up!It seems that Zonk is not interesting our mares at all (so perhaps he is a gelding) and it could be the scent of Shadowfax in the air is causing our girls to get excited. Now if Zonk was a stallion (and remember he is a war pony which I would think should be a stallion) he and Shadowfax could have a head-to-head confrontation. This could be interesting and end rather saddly, too. Unless the Meara and Zebron are gentlestuds and want to get along. I don't really think Shadowfax would have anything to be jealous of anyway, Zonk is striped! Ratts! It is December and I was kind of wishing Storm might bring home a Shadowfax foal. Maybe by the time we are through going through the months, they can run into Shadowfax in a more productive month so she (and/or Lady and/or Melony)can go into foal! Now Zebrons are not small pony-sized critters. They aren't quite as large as a horse, but they are not of a small pony size either. There are actually several sizes of ponies and I was picturing Melony as one of the larger sized pony breeds. So Zonk and Melony are not too much smaller than Storm and Lady.

I wasn't thinking Shadowfax would show up until we either get to the Redhorn Pass (so he could lead us across safely, of course, before The Fellowship gets there and before the snow starts) or as we leave the horses loose if we are behind The Fellowship. He could show up then and that would put Desi and Stormrider at ease to know he was there and we could ask him if he could take the horses to the other side near Mirrormere/Silverlode and Lothlorien.
If we go behind The Fellowship, I need to do my tricksy part between Hollin Ridge and the Redhorn Pass so we can have a way to get past the Watcher and get into the West-door.
It depends on how much excitement, danger, and adventure we want our characters to get involved in! Can't wait to see what Anorinha posts now about Zonk and our next step of our journey!

Yay! Stormy! Friday! Hope this does the trick!
I'm working the weekend. I'll only be available early morning or evening. Monday morning only. After that, I'll be on my way to NJ, then PA, then Il (almost in your neck of the woods) until 6/15. Internet use will be spotty. Fan

Well, it is my turn after Andorinha and then Desi's turn. So you can go galavant around the USA all you want!
And . . . That will give me time to get thru the Intro (I think I am still in it) and start practicing with Sandwen's skills and talents.

Andy's footnote in the story said:Okay, in the Book, The Watcher grabs Frodo and pulls him into the lake and swishes him around a bit before he is rescued. I hope the effects of rotenone wears off in the lake before Frodo gets dipped! In the Book, Frodo doesn't suddenly seem immobilized once he is rescued. Maybe a bit shook up from being captured like that but not dead weight to be carried into the tunnel!
Is there snow in the Redhorn Pass before The Fellowship tries that way? I thought it didn't start snowing until they got up there. Anyway, it might be rather difficult for horses to traverse -- narrow cliffs, bad footing, etc. But Sam had Bill the Pony with them up there. Donkeys ride the cliffs of the Grand Canyon but those paths have been found ahead of time and the best ones chosen by men to give the donkey rides. I would rather not ride through Redhorn Pass.

It should read *Rotenone - magic sleep powder for fish and other aquatic animals. Allows scientists and other interested parties to assess populations, distributions and species in any body of water. Side affects - pleasant dreams.
I will have you know that I practice "catch and release" when I fish. (Except for a few elusive trophy fish) And the edible ones -- Dace, catfish etc. Fan

and so DaleAnn rattled on and on, trying desperately to explain to Haldir (the Fish Warden of Gondor) just why she had more than three hundred perch in her possession at one time...
LOL "Catch and Release, eh? And just when were you going to release all these perch?" Haldir's grim manner was only a bit more severe than his hand upon her collar as he dragged the protesting DA off to jail.
"Oh well," she moaned, "It's a fair cop, and not a lick-a-miss, I reckon."

Stormy, the movie version seems to attribute the bad weather to Saruman's intervention, but in the book, it seems rather more likely that the Redhorn, maybe influenced by Sauron, is guarding its own passes... Consequently, anyone trying that path at this time in the story might trigger a storm. Also, what condition would the fillies be in after oxygen starvation, extreme cold, driving sleet, and no good forage? They'd look rather poor for Shadowfax...
Sigh, rotenone works by absorption through the gills, Frodo, presumably has no gills, and the stuff would not affect him. It certainly did not affect me. In the boy scouts, we went on a mountain trek, 50 miles, poor food logistics, ran down to half rations after the third day, were starving. Game and Fish dept was cleaning out one of the lakes to re-stock with trout. We were allowed to swim after the stunned fish, take all we wanted. Ate tons of fish that nite and the next day... No adverse effects, except maybe a bit of residual brain damage?

Yep, those conditions would not make the horses very happy at all! However, Storm keeps her weight on very well. She can look at food and gain weight, so she would most likely fair better than the others.
Nah! I don't like the Redhorn Pass anyway myself.
But does The Watcher have gills? Wasn't he more octopus-like? Do octopi have gills? Well, we can try it on him anyway and it is good to know Frodo won't be in any trouble because of it!

I posted my bit. I apologize that it is rather lengthy but I wanted to cover a lot of our passage, especially over some of the slow boring days that were ahead of them.
It is Desi's turn now that she is back from Cancun!
