I'm not familiar with del Toro's body of work, having seen only his P.L., which I like a great deal. Apparently, for some Tolkien readers on another forum, they fear he will not be able to bring the "light" and up-beat flavour of the book Hobbit to the screen. Beats me. I'm surprised they did not go after one of the Harry Potter directors after the "Great Troubles" made P.J. unavailable/ unacceptable to the "owners."
Choosing del Toro may mean they are planning on LOTS of special effects, including Computer Generated characters?

To be honest, his body of work is fairly small. Or at least the portion of it American audiences have been exposed to. He directed a number of films in Mexico but I have not seen them. Since then, he's directed Blade II, Hellboy, and Pan's Labyrinth, all of which are quite entertaining and full of innovative fantasy/horror touches which have made me a fan.
I can understand the concern from other Tolkien readers. del Toro's movies do tend to be on the dark and creepy side. That will be great for the goblins, the trolls, Gollum, and so forth but it will be interesting to see how he handles the lighter moments.
We'll see. He handled the lighter, funnier moments in Hellboy well. I think he can strike a balance.

I would hope Del Toro has seen the LOTR films (if not for his own entertainment) at least in preparation for The Hobbit movie. I hope he is a fan of Tolkien's works as PJ is. Having a love for the story would help in creating it the way it should be.
There are some very dark parts to The Hobbit as well as lighter moments. I haven't seen Hellboy or Pan's Labyrinthso I have no idea what his talents are. Looks like I should visit the video store and see.

I believe I read that del Toro is a huge fan of The Hobbit but found LOTR to be a difficult read (they are very different in style, I suppose). However, he loved the movies and he and Jackson seem to have great respect for each others' work.

Remember PJ was know for doing some gruesome movies and he loved blood and gore. So I don't think it is a problem having G del Toro who is know for some dark movies. I have not seen any of his movies though, they aren't the kind that interest me.
I really hope there aren't many computer generated characters. I really hope the dwarves are actual actors! Otherwise I would just as well watch the Hobbit cartoon!

Zauber sent me this link abour Sir Ian McKellen: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7375245.stmDo I dare take off the "Let The Hobbit Happen" banner on the forum! It looks like things are starting to roll now! I have always wanted to see Pan's Labyrinth but just haven't gotten around to getting it. I will make sure I set some time aside and rent it. I haven't heard a lot about Hellboy though. I will check it out, too. I wonder who will play Bilbo and the Dwarves? I don't think they would computer generate the Dwarves other that shrinking them down--or would it be reversed--enlargening Gandalf! I think the Eagles and Wargs might be computer generated or at least large puppets made for them. Smaug would probably be a combinatin of computer and puppet, too. I can't wait to see Smaug and who's voice will be his?

Glad to hear Ian is going to be back as Gandalf!
Hmm, yeah, I do not want too much "animation" style CGI stuff either, the Dragon in Dragon Heart was convincingly done, so maybe they can work Smaug up well, but whose voice? LOL, I really like Richard Boone's deep and gravelly voice in the animated Hobbit, but he may be dead by now...

I haven't heard a lot about Hellboy though. I will check it out, too. Not sure if you like superhero movies but if so, Hellboy is one of the best. The movie and comic series are a blend of adventure, fantasy/folklore, and horror elements, centered on a demon with a human soul. Lots of fun. Hellboy II comes out this summer and seems to be delving into the folklore side a lot more. The trailer has a group of eerie, blonde elf-like characters that reminded me of Haldir from LOTR. So we may be seeing Jackson's influence on del Toro already! As for Smaug's voice, I wouldn't be surprised if del Toro cast Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as they've worked together often and he has a deep, gravelly voice. Keith David (of Gargoyles, Armageddon, and the U.S. Army ads, among other things) might be an interesting choice too. Always my go-to guy for deep, booming voiceovers.

According to iMDB, Andy Serikis is rumored to play Gollum. It also says Ian McKellen is "rumored" to play Gandalf, although the link from Zauber confirmed it?!
As you can see, I didn't take off the "Let the Hobbit Happen" banner but modified it!
